Summer Holiday ideas for family?

Probably stating the obvious but have you tried any travel agents?

We found travel counsellors to be excellent for finding exactly what we wanted. No affiliation with them other than having used them for a honeymoon and another big trip a few years ago (before kids).

As far as I know they all work kind of independently so if you read some of their bio's you should find someone that has plenty of experience booking 5* family holidays

Have a look at Bahia Principe La Fantasia Golf de Sur Teneife going there ourselves next June family of 4 - 2 kids aged 6.

Thanks all and for anyone asking a similar qn who hasn't been to princess yaiza I'd recommend it! Just fancy a change

I have friends whose parents alternated each year between holidays at home (caravan park by beach, bring the bikes, crazy golf, type thing) and fancier trips abroad (5 star hotel such as OP describes).

Give you one guess which ones they have the best memories of!

We use TUI holidays - tons of 4 star / 5 star choices of all inclusive hotels with evening entertainment, kids club and so on. Flights and airport pick up/ drop is included.

We used American Holidays for the "big family trip" to the US earlier this year and were excellent. We did end up booking some things ourselves but got some great ideas from them and they were very patient and helpful all the way through. Couldn't praise them enough TBH

If the beach isn't a priority then Germany is a great destination. The Europa Park near Strasbourg , just over the German border, is one of the biggest Theme Parks in Europe and Germany is beautiful; lots of fantastic towns and cities, very easy to travel around, good value, family friendly and, in my experience, generally very nice and friendly people.

Camping holidays from my childhood are my most cherished memories x

Have a friend who brought his family on a royal Caribbean cruise some years ago. He found it was very heavily geared towards children and a bit manic as a consequence.

There are other companies (e.g. princess, celebrity) which seem to offer a bit more balance.

Just to add we booked with Sandaya (they have resorts around the EU) France. Stayed in the 5*Sequoia Park in Saint-Just-Luzac. It was enjoyable.

Its hard to beat a camping holiday in France for young Children. I have very fond memories of bringing the family to various destinations on the west coast of France. Most camp sites will have swimming pools, restaurants and entertainment for the children. The beaches are the best in Europe. There are many options near La Palmyre which also has a super zoo.

It all depends on your own family and how much work you want to put in to it. Personally we have always organised a 2 week holiday ourselves. It usually involves self catering accommodation (AirBnB has been great for this in recent years) and usually a bit of travel, e.g. one week in one location and another somewhere else. The accommodation is the base and we then plan day trips from there. The more popular holidays have been ones where we stayed in the center of towns as it means that when you get back in the evening you can stroll around town for dinner and ice creams after and maybe stop in a square for a drink and watch the world go by. The best thing about this approach imho is that you get to mix more with locals, dine in restaurants with locals and take in the atmosphere of a town. It's a great exposure for kids to see the different cultures and mannerisms. It also means you can visit the brilliant local markets and maybe even try your hand at the local language. It's a lot more work planning this type of holiday than resorts but I think it is absolutely worth it.
Day trips can be bike hire, sightseeing, swimming, shopping, basically whatever suits your own family. Car hire is optional but does give you a bit more flexibility in planning these.
Agree with Purple that the west of Germany and east of France is a great region to visit and as Purple said, Europa Park is a brilliant option with kids. Italy is another brilliant option, you can't really beat the Italian food and hospitality, especially when you have kids.
