Just heard on Pat Kenny that of 346 road deaths only 3 occured on motorways and 11 on dual carraigeways.Does that suggest that only 4% of garda speed checks are on motorways?

Very droll

When it comes to the business of speed detection its very important to get a quick payback on the capital spend.

What the lads are looking for is to Max. the ROI ( return on investment ). You dont get that if you set up shop on some B road in west Cork. Best to head for some nice busy multilane road just out of town where the limit is 40 but everyone does 50, eh ?

BTW watch out for missing speed limit signs near Clare Hall ( where ? ) The goons who built the replacement road didnt bother to reinstate the speed limit signs

Re: re : speed check locations

Less road accidents occur on motorways because motorways are safer than minor roads. I would guess that (in proportionate terms) a lot more breaches of speed limits occur on motorways than on minor roads as it is easier to travel at faster speeds on them. Road casualties and breaches of speed limits are not the same thing, although travelling at fast speeds increases the risk of accident.

From my own observation and experience, I reckon most crashes are down to simple driver error. Again travelling fast, drinking etc increases the risk of error, but, on the other hand, it is perfectly possible to kill or be killed in a traffic accident, while travelling 100% sober and/or well within speed limits. Back in the days of asses and carts, people also died in road accidents even though traffic moved at only 10-20mph.

Any attempt to reduce road casualties will fail unless it is aimed at reducing driver error. This is why the penalty points system has failed to do so, despite the apparently temporary statistical blip that indicated otherwise last year.

Re: re : speed check locations

Are there any hairdryer-style speed traps on motorways? Dual-carriageways yes, but motorways - No!

scot

Sometimes you can get hair-drier attacks on motorways. The farce will stop on bridges over motorways to collect money.

(They can't park on the hard shoulder because that wouldn't be allowed)

Re: Scot

Most motorways do have "lay-bys" for "official vehicles only".
They don't need to stop you to do you (aka speed cameras).

Somebody should have mentioned that to the driver of the GATSO van on the "normal" hard shoulder of the M50 near the Finglas exit on Saturday morning.
