What neighboorhoods are nice and safe for a family with young kids in Dublin, from this list - Knocklyon, Kimmage, Tempelogue, Perrystown, Dartry, Churchtown, Milltown, Windy Arbor, Dundrum? Are there any specific roads to avoid? (we're looking to buy a house in the area surrounding Rathgar - which is too expensive for us)

Hi greenturtle,

Welcome to AAM.

Your post appears to ask an awful lot covering so many areas and specific roads also.

Your best bet is to do your homework using

www.google.ie

www.boards.ie

and previous threads on AAM.

If you have a specific area in mind take a few trips around the area both during the day to see the amount of traffic and at night time also just to get a general feel. Maybe chat to a few reputable estate agents (run reviews on these also) and let them know what your needs are and see what they recommend. I could be wrong but if there is a neighbourhood watch page on Facebook you could have a look at some of those or even sign up if possible.

Good luck with the house hunting.

if rathgar is too expensive then draw a line through dartry, milltown and probably dundrum, they won’t be much cheaper if they are cheaper at all

You're missing Rathfarnham which would probably suit your needs best.

As above check the areas yourself, maybe go to local shops / restaurants / parks and get a feel for the various areas.

When pubs reopen, drop into a couple on a Saturday and you'll get more insight.

All of the areas you listed are grand. May be the odd road or estate that would be better not to buy in, but they're all good areas.
