sophisticated gmail scam

A Kerryman recieved an email from what he thought was Google last week. The mail asked him to update his account details which he did.

Soon afterwards all his friends recieved a message from his gmail account with the subject "Need your help urgently".

The mail claimed to be from the Keryman and claimed that he had been reported to the police in Nigeria and neded a loan of US$2,000 to help him get home. In fact he had never left the country.

The first he heard of it was when scores of concerned friends phoned him.

Don't mean to sound funny about it but it sounds to me like it was more the Kerryman being 'unsophisticated' than the gmail scam being 'sophisticated'.

These type of emails fly around all the time. Basic rule of thumb (and common sense) is never respond to any email that asks you to confirm/change/divulge any sensitive information. No reputable company will (should?) ever ask you to do this.
