The Irish Times article did not say that the thirty wealthiest people in Ireland pay little or no tax. It said that thirty of the wealthiest people in Ireland pay little or no tax. There is a subtle but major difference.
Anyway I wouldn't place too much reliance on any statements the Irish Times makes on the subject of tax. Saturday's issue contained high-profile articles by Fintan O'Toole and Colm Keena on the subject of tax evasion in the construction industry. Both articles were riddled with major inaccuracies and half-truths that showed both writers had either failed to research their facts beforehand or simply didn't understand what they were talking about. The effect in both cases was to badly undermine the credibility of the (otherwise largely valid) points they were trying to make. This was an absolute shame and sadly doesn't say a whole lot for editorial standards in D'Olier Street.
