Heard this mentioned today on the radio? Anyone using it or know if it's secure / useful for Irish users etc.

There was a big discussion here recently on it but cant find it now. Ive used it and the other main VOIP SP babble. Skype will only let you dial other skype users unless you open an account. Babble is basically the same thing but you can make free calls to landline numbers in any country where theres a babble server (theres about 20 worldwide). Babble had a 3-4 month intro offer before xmas, where you could ring mobiles for free in any of the countries but thats gone now.
The skype conference call feature can be a laugh. If using skype, use headphones, as you'll get echo off the pc speakers. I didnt get this with babble tho.

I've used this and have found the quality (over broadband) disappointing relative to my expectations. Quality at my end has always been fine but the other (international) parties have complained of poor quality.

A number of times, I've ended up reverting to ordinary phone.

Its worth trying out with friends or family first and then to make your own judgement as to whether you can live with the quality.

I've been using Skype for quite a while now.
The quality of line is great (I use the built in speaker and microfone in my laptop), to Ireland, UK & Spain, although I get an echo when talking to a buddy in HongKong.
Skype has cut one my friends telco costs in half, as he speaks to people in the UK a lot.

Just started using Skype and it is phenomenal. Anyone who reads my posts will know I don't give praise lightly, and I'm far more likely to be on the complaining side of a discussion.

Take my word for it, try this, even if you only have a dial up connection.

PC to PC there is a bit of a lag, I've only tested Dial Up to Broadband, but I believe even Broadband to Broadband has some lag.

However where this service really works is using Skypeout to call actual phones around the world. About 1.7 cent a minute to pretty much anywhere in Europe or the US.

I've just had a 1 hour 15 minute chat with somone in Boston, it cost €1.30 and there wasn't a single dropped syllable or lag. I'm told my voice dropped once or twice on the other end, but nothing serious.

As far as I can see the only Eircom call that's cheaper is local calls on evenings or weekends.

Like I say, PC to PC isn't great, but I'm sure will improve. But PC to Actual Phone is superb.

I know Im repeating what I said earlier in this thread but...
If you like skype at 1.7c a minute to a landline then try voip using babble at only 1c a minute. (charged in sterling)

PC to PC I use skype as its free, but for calls to landlines and mobiles I use babble for regular, undropped and crystal clear calls to england and germany. Babble to mobile is 15c/min in any country where theres a babble server. Ive called a mobile in Oz and had a crystal clear 5 min conversation for 76c.

One other thing, if anyones getting echo on skype calls, Ive found thats it because one or other of the callers is using speakers that are delaying the audio, so get both parties to use headphones, which has fixed the echo for me.
