Should I get a notification from Electric Ireland to say that my contract is ending?

My Electric supply is from Bord Gais, I get a reminder that my contract is due to expire.

My Gas supply is with Electric Ireland, I do not get a reminder from them that my contract is due to expire.

Should I be getting a reminder?

Thought that this was only a requirement for phone/broadband/TV contracts?
At a glance/quick search I can't see any equivalent requirement on the CRU website.

Thanks Clubman. This is really annoying.

My contract with Electric Ireland ended last March. I have checked back through my emails and I cannot find any reminder from them or new offer to stay with them.

I normally check all utilities, car insurances, home insurances every year to see if I can get a better deal before renewing. I am nearly certain that I renewed a new plan last March with Electric Ireland. I now have to check back through my notes to see if I did this. I would be interested to know if anyone has renewed a plan with Electric Ireland but it was never implemented.

I only found out that I was out of contract today when I was checking the price per unit that I was paying.

Phoning Electric Ireland today was an experience in itself that I would not wish to repeat.

I got a renewal from Bord Gais but not Electric Ireland. See below.

"We’re writing to you to let you know that your electricity contract ends on 09 November 2024 and we’d like to thank you for choosing Bord Gáis Energy. The Estimated Annual Bill (EAB) for this price plan was xxxxxxx.
What happens next?
When your contract expires you will remain on your current variable tariffs which have an Estimated Annual Bill of xxxxxxxx, but you will lose price plan discounts. We wanted to ask if this is the right plan for you. You will automatically default to this higher rate at the conclusion of your contract. We know you can shop around for a better deal and there are no penalties should you consider switching when your contract expires; However, did you know that you could make great savings by signing up to one of our other price plans when your current contract expires?"

Current supplier - SSE Airtricity clearly say on page 1 of their bills; Your contract end date is xx/xx/25.

Rather than depend on the supplier to let me know, when I sign up I put a reminder in my calendar for 2 weeks before the contract ends so I can shop around and be ready to move 1 day after contract ends. That way it does not matter if they let me know or not.

I agree. It is (partly) my fault. However I have just checked back through my emails and I did get a reminder in 2022 that my contract was ending. I signed up to a new 14% discount for 12 months, ending March 2023. I got no reminder in March 2023. So the reminders were hit and miss.

I think what must have happened was that energy prices were jumping all over the place in 2023. Prices were dropping so I did not want to tie myself in to a 12 month contract....only to see prices falling further just as I committed. Unfortunately, when prices stabilised, I never tied myself in to a new contract.

It just goes to show that you have to be constantly alert and on the ball all of the time.

Two car insurances, two Laya health care policies, house insurance, two utility bill insurances, TV contracts etc.

Yes, I got a notification from Electric Ireland:

"Hi Steelstown,
Your contract is soon coming to an end.
We do our best to deliver value to all our customers. That is why we're inviting you to stay with us for another year on an EnergySaver plan and a new discounted rate of 28%".

The March 2023 reminder may have gone into your spam folder

That may well be the case and it was automatically deleted after 10 days because the most recent one that I received from them came from this unusual email address: noreply@electricireland.nw008.com That email came trying to attract us back to El Irl because we are with Bord Gais and were originally with them.

We always receive the reminders/notifications but have an electricity account only and just wondering would this problem have anything to do with gas accounts rather than electric ones

AFAIK it doesn't seem to be an obligation on the utilities providers, but if the toothless CRU were really interested in consumer rights they would insist it was included clearly on every bill and same with the equally toothless Comreg.

You're not wrong, but I doubt it would stimulate much switching.

Most people are just lazy when it comes to this and leave hundreds of euros a year on the table.
