Or alternatively having a Nightsaver timer switch which is left on all the time but which only actually kicks in for a few hours at night on the discounted rate to heat water for the next day? There is also a manual boost switch for heating water on demand if the water heated overnight runs out.

Nightsaver is not such an attactive option since 1st January, now that the ESB charge you €244.03 to fit the dual tariff meter.
According to the ESB website, you need to transfer 5 units from day to night every day for three years to recoup the cost.
Sort of penalising you for thinking about energy saving?

I'm not saying that Nightsaver or electricity generally is necessarily the best option but some of us (in Goldshield homes) are stuck with it short of doing a big conversion to some other alternative.

Inspite of all the theories the only way to know for certain is to test it.

Try it for a period of time (a day, a week?) and see how it affects your meter...
