I booked a flight in January for a flight in September. I am now unable to fly. Am I entitled to a refund considering the length of time they have to sell the ticket? Thanks.

If you can’t claim on your insurance you may be able to pass the ticket on to someone else, theres a fee for a name change

Or you might be able to change it to another date/route

No you can’t get a refund. It is not their fault you’ve can’t or won’t fly.

What is the reason you can’t fly?

If you have travel insurance that covers you for certain events, you may be entitled to claim from your insurance (things like illness, bereavement.) But even that generally has an excess.

So Jim what advice do you have for the poster with the query? Based on the details they have posted.

Because the idea the airline has plenty of time to “sell” a “sold” ticket on the basis of “loads of time” to sell isn’t really a Ryanair winner with Michael. It’s not their model.

Part of the business model of airlines is that they sell tickets cheaply a long time in advance because a percentage of them will not show up. So they sell 105% of the seats.

That would fall apart if they gave people refunds.

Having said that, I think it would be a good idea for airlines to show a bit of flexibility. But I suppose if they did, people would exploit it. They might book flights at 5 different times and then cancel 4 of them. Or book a flight in anticipation of their team qualifying for some big match and then cancel it if they did not fly.

On balance, the current system of low cost and no refunds is best.

What business is it of yours or anyone elses? He has stated already that he cannot fly on that date.
Sometimes there's more to a simple question than a yes/ no answer. In this case perhaps the reason is an insurable event the OP may have cover for, it might be due to work commitments where the employer will compensate.

Perhaps your response should have been a little less reactionary.

There is a 2nd paragraph on refunds in the Ryanair policy which states
You may also be entitled to a refund if an immediate family member who is not travelling with you dies within 10 days prior to your booked flight or if someone on your booking passes away before your trip.

Obviously the 10 day rule does not apply here and we have no way of knowing if the 2nd part is relevant unless the OP says so.

A different option for the OP is to change the flight to one that suits, for a fee of course!
