Roller blind for huge bay window!

Basically, i have a really big bay window on the first floor of an apartment block! The light that comes in is fantastic but obviously the world and its mother can see in.

Im in the process of trying to get a blind for it, but not a top-down roller blind but from the bottom-up! I basically need to cover the bottom half of the window as once thats covered nobody on the ground floor can see in, but still allow light in from the top half..i hope this makes sense. Two blinds places have told me this isnt possible. I was proposing a normal roller blind with a metal bar at the end and 2 hooks in the middle of the window frame, so when i roll it up from the floor it hooks in the middle of the window. Theyve explained that the spring action wont work properly. I find it hard to believe that trying to get a half blind is that difficult. Any siggestions?

They have blinds that can be set at any height on the window as they slide along a vertical track at the window edge.

They also have blinds that have graduated shading, or have two layers that slide against each other, aligning and unaligning slits that allow more or less light in.

No affiliation, just can't wait to install their blinds.

Bottom up blinds are definitely available.Looking at the size of the main section across the bay, you will need to treat it with 2 blinds to cover the width, To do it with 1 wide blind will take you into very heavy duty blinds intented for commercial use and will cost you a fortune ie €1k-€2k.You will also find the mechanism on 1 large blind quite trying, when you go to operate the blind.

Have you considered etched glass with a regular square or circle pattern for the bottom panes? You can buy a film for a few quid to see what it looks like.

Cheers for all the links! I rang crumlin blinds today,on good reports on AAM but she basically said a roller blind was a no go and did v little else in the way of alternative suggestions! A top-down roller blind wastes all the fab light that fills the room...so will keep looking! Cheers for the replies AAMers!!

I know Caseys in Cork do them, and they have the contact name for the supplier in Dubiln. Give them a ring to get it. I know that there is a main supplier in Dublin as I have rang them in the past. Don't still have the details though.

I have a bay window that I needed two narrow blinds and one wider one and it was working out something like £180 sterling per blind. I don't know how that compares to other blinds but it was more than I was willing to pay!

They do look nice though.

Yeh they look cool! Considering i can get a 4 x top-down roller blinds for the entire window for €290..that is v dear! Looks like curtains will be on the back burner for awhile so!!

Our windows are about 2.5 meters square, and each duette blind will cost about €500.

The issue we have is that two sides of the room are floor to ceiling windows, three of the above windows per side, one of which is facing south. I want to have good control of the shading and insulation, and the duette honeycombed blinds fit the bill more than a normal roller blind.

What you need are either bottom up or 50/50 blinds.
There is a company I used in UK called eclectics.co.uk. They deliver to ireland.

Bottom up are very expensive but a cheaper alternitive is their 50/50 blinds. These have a see through mesh at the top and any colour you fancy at the bottom. This allows you to keep your privacy and let lots of light in. I got one for the bathroom where i dont have frosted glass. Im delighted with it!

Have you considered a lace curtain along the bottom half of the window as a temporary measure while you source the permanent solution?
