II was very surprised to learn at the time that despite the property not being rented (2 bed apartment in Alicante) I was liable for a Deemed Rental Income tax return in addition to a wealth tax return!

Many people buy overseas property without realising what they're getting into in terms of overseas tax liabilities. The agent you used to buy really should have explained this to you (as should your overseas lawyer and/or accountant).

Lesson learned, I guess. :)
 
It is important to realise that unless qualified to do so the agent cant give any tax advice. Seems to be a lot of tax experts in the last posts.

these books are excellent and well worth looking at, before you buy.
Use blevins for advice on tax planning etc for overseas portfolio and although expensive they are excellent.
