btw i dont qualify for carers allowance. thanks.

Can't answer your question re the restite grant but if you gave up work to care for your child then you would be entitled to carer's benefit which isn't means tested.

Presume you are getting the domicilliary care grant each month?

hi flash, its my father who 90 yrs im caring for,im self employed so wouldnt qualify 4 benefit nor carers allowance.

Sorry - I must have mis-read about who you were caring for.
Didn't realise you were self employed either.

Hi, the rules for receipt of RCG are you must be getting Carers Benefit, Allowance or Domiciliary Care Allowance. If you are not getting one of the above payments, you must be:
  • Aged 16 or over
  • Ordinarily resident in the State
  • Caring for the person on a full-time basis
  • Caring for the person for at least six months - this period must include the first Thursday in June (that is, 5 June 2009)
  • Living with the person being cared for or, if not, be contactable quickly by a direct system of communication (for example, telephone or alarm).
You mention you are self-employed. You do not qualify for RCG if you are working more than 15 hours per week outside the home. I'd write to the Department and try to get answers. You are entitled to a documented decision on your claim together with a reason for refusal, if applicable.

hi annette, even though im self employed,i have cut back on my work big time to look after the da,i really dont want to be a burden on the state on claiming carers allowance fulltime, but the r.c.g. was a bonus and a recognition of my caring for him.

I fully understand your predicament.... unfortunately in terms of policy, the long-terms cost savings that carers make to the State does not translate into financial supports... and moreso in relation to working carers. Personally, I think the fact that you are only able to work 15 hours per week is very restrictive - and it certainly does nothing to enable carers to remain economically active - let alone acknowledge the social and personal needs of carers.
