Rent tax credit for student children

Hi,
Can my husband and I claim tax credit for rent paid for more than one child in the year? We have two student kids paying rent in Dublin?

For 2024 and 2025, the maximum value of the Rent Tax Credit is €1,500 per year for jointly assessed married couples or civil partners. The maximum value is €750 in all other cases, including single persons. This is the case no matter how many properties you pay rent for during the year.

In other words if you have exhausted the relief on one child no further relief is available. That is my understanding.

Hi WizardDr,
Thanks for your response. I am applying for credit for 2023 which I believe is 1000 max. We are using ROS and are able to claim for one child but not the second even though the credit for the first one is only 540 so we haven't exhausted the relief.

Just to update this in case of any confusion:

How much can you claim?

The Rent Tax Credit reduces the amount of Income Tax that you are due to pay for a tax year. To benefit you must have an Income Tax liability to offset against your Rent Tax Credit. The credit does not provide relief against Universal Social Charge (USC) or Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI).

Budget 2025 increased the maximum Rent Tax Credit for 2024 from:
  • €750 to €1,000 for a single assessed taxpayer
    and
  • €1,500 to €2,000 for a jointly assessed married couple or civil partners.
