Refund from shop query

Hi,
I was in a shop the other day and looking at buying a relatively expensive item of clothing. I said if I decided to return it after bringing it home and deciding I didn’t want it anymore would I be able to get a cash refund.

The employee said I could only get a refund/credit note that could be used in the shop and they would not refund me the cash amount.

So, essentially I had to spend the value of the item in the shop regardless of whether I keep it or return it.

Maybe this is normal and if it is, so be it, but I just wanted to check.

This is normal. In fact they don't have to give your anything for a change of mind.

Returning something you don’t want​

You do not have an automatic right to a refund when returning something you bought in a shop because you have changed your mind.

If there is nothing wrong with the item (for example, there is no fault) you have no legal right to return the goods. Whether or not you can get your money back depends on the seller’s returns policy.

However, many sellers voluntarily allow customers to return or replace goods during a certain time period. The seller may offer a refund, exchange or credit note as a goodwill gesture. Check what the seller’s returns policy is before you buy.

Thanks, good to know. Funnily enough if I bought the item online from them I do have an option to return and get a full cash refund.
