Refund from shop query

Hi,
I was in a shop the other day and looking at buying a relatively expensive item of clothing. I said if I decided to return it after bringing it home and deciding I didn’t want it anymore would I be able to get a cash refund.

The employee said I could only get a refund/credit note that could be used in the shop and they would not refund me the cash amount.

So, essentially I had to spend the value of the item in the shop regardless of whether I keep it or return it.

Maybe this is normal and if it is, so be it, but I just wanted to check.

Thanks

Thanks, good to know. Funnily enough if I bought the item online from them I do have an option to return and get a full cash refund.

Yes, but you may have to pay the costs of returning the item depending on the seller's returns policy.

In the store you can try something on or inspect it carefully and make an informed decision. That's not always possible online.

The store, by offering a credit note, is exceeding the legal requirements in relation to changing your mind on an item.

Some stores will offer a refund as a customer service, but it would be a minority.
