Probably the lack of responses reflects that we usually rely on informal advice here so members typically would not have direct experience with a fee based service.

I'd suggest having a read of these threads which should give you a good indication of the kind of questions you need to think about - your location, what hospitals are covered \ not covered across public and private, how important is out patient expenses (refunds for GPs, physios), excess.

Based on what you've said, probably you should opt for a higher excess, don't need much out patient refunds for day to day expenses so it's all about what hospitals \ locations you need to be able to access.

That might give you an understanding \ confidence to pick out a suitable plan yourself.

You could try out the Laya pick a plan wizard, for example:

Hi faolteam, your premium will be loaded as you are over 34 (the loading will be +2% for every year over 34 that you haven't been covered, so if you are 50 and have never had health insurance before, the premium will be 30% higher). More information here

After that it really depends on what you want. I would recommend that you start by looking at this website

It allows you to look at the plans across all providers and compare them.

It would be worthwhile having a look through the plans available there first, look at what is and isn't covered and then start to narrow down your search. No-one is going to be able to say "get this plan" on the information you have given as it doesn't actually give any indication of what your preference for cover is. Maybe you want to be able to access private hospitals, maybe you don't. Maybe some hospitals are more important to be able to access than others, maybe you have a family history of a particular condition that you should be considering, maybe you want to be covered for things like dentist visits or eye checks or health checks. The various plans all have different things prioritised.

Once you have an idea of where your preferences lie you would then be in a position to ask for people's opinion on the plan(s) you are considering and whether they think there are similar plans at a better price.
