Preparing grass for winter

I want to have a nice lawn next year. I kept it well this summer but it was hard because it was in poor shape last spring. How can I prepare it for next year. Can I prevent moss?

Last year, I gave it a trim in late October but I kept it a maximum height that the mower let me do. I raked the leaves twice during the winter and once in Spring.

Any advice?

Sulfate of iron is, I believe, the thing to use for moss. For a feed for over the winter, I've been recommended to use potato fertilizer, as it has a lower proportion of nitrogen in it, so doesn't cause the grass to grow wild. I haven't tried it myself, though.

Evergreen make an Autumn feed for lawns. it is low in Nitrogen, so does not encourage growth, and it contains weed killer and moss killer. I have used it and found it to be a good product. It is available in most garden centres at this time of year.

slash - could you use this on a lawn that was planted this year around may??? or would the weedkiller damage it

I really don't know. You'd have to look at the usage instructions on the box.

Some good advice here:
