Power supply dead on PC - where do I find files saved on Desktop

The power supply died on my old PC. I am slaving the hard drive in another PC at the moment. I had a lot of files saved in folders on the (old PC's) desktop. Anybody know here I could retrieve these from?
 
If you have the jumpers set correctly you should be able to find them under My Computer and the drive should show up there. Jumpers are little clips on the actual hard drive. You need to look online or it may be written on the actual label.

If no drive showing you have the jumpers set wrong or need to go into bios (F12 or F2 on boot) to tell the computer what type of device is attached.

Also desktop files/folders are stored under C:\Documents and Settings\"username"\Desktop
 
I can see the old drive on the new PC - so access is not a problem. It's just where to look.

If you can't see them or get access then Windows/NTFS permissions may be preventing you. In which case boot the machine using a GNU/Linux live CD distribution (e.g. Ubuntu) and copy them from there to a USB drive or whatever.
 
Thanks all. Found what I needed thanks to your guidance. Next project - I wonder is it difficult to change a power supply?

It is easy to change, unless it is a small (hard to find) model or one of DELL’s proprietary models which does not use the standard connector.
