Anybody get a very professional looking email as follows :

"(Name) You shared a document to Review" and the email asks you to to click on a file to review a document.

I got one , I thought it was a bone fide business proposal as it came from a reliable business contact's email address.

Now I am getting phone calls and emails from people on my email list saying they have received the same email from me .

Obviously I'm worried about my contacts' and my own online security

Any advice ?

Was it really from the person's actual email address or was the alias formatted to make it look like it was? Did you click on it?

Any decent email service/client, or even the likes of free services like Hotmail/Outlook.com or Gmail, should generally catch this sort of thing and flag it as potential spam. Didn't your system do this?

Why would you click on it if it's saying you shared a document for review if you knew that you didn't?

@Sharpie - Did you open that email via your phone or laptop / computer / tablet ?

The virus might be on that machine and not just your email. Have you a virus scanner that you can run ?

Because I was busy and stupidly got caught thinking it was a genuine business proposal from a trusted email and I've pointed that out from the start.

Thanks Jazz01. I opened it on my laptop. I have run my virus scanner and it detects nothing. I am more worried about my contacts who have received the email from me as a follow up.

Thanks Clubman , but that's about 500 phone calls and I certainly don't want to be emailing them to explain anything . In any case I don't know if they all got the document, about 5 people contacted me to say they got it. I presume the other 495 ignored it or , as you said previously, maybe their email service client picked up on it.
