Your computer could be infected. Press F8 a couple of times when you first turn on your computer. You will get whats called an advanced startup menu. Choose Last Known Good Configuration. If windows loads successfully, scan your computer with Anti-Virus and programs to remove infections.
Also if you have an Windows XP CD try and boot from the CD, by inserting the CD and turn the pc on, you should see a message saying press any key to boot from CD

thats rather a sweeping statement...They say about 4 yrs is good for a pc after that it may start going down hill a bit. If you can't get it going satisfactorily I would consider getting a new one.
