Paying voluntary NICs

My application to pay voluntary class 2 NICs has been accepted and now I can make payment for 15 years. I'm just wondering are people adding up the amount due for the 15 years and doing 1 transfer for the total amount. I have read here that a sterling transfer is the best option so I'm happy to do that but just wondering if I need to be mindful of anything else.
Also it says on the letter I received to confirm with the pension service whether your state pension will increase if you pay any shortfall. I did ring last year and spoke to someone. Do I need any further confirmation thanjs
Thank you.

I pay year by year the precise amount in GBP. Separate transfers.

I think that’s more likely to get mixed up at their end.

Then I send them a letter asking them to assign each payment to a UK tax year.

Does anyone have the link for where to pay online? I have the letter saying that I'm eligible for Class 2 and with the breakdown of each payment for each year, but I can't find a page on the gov.uk site that unambiguously says "pay here if you live abroad". There's one page for Class 3, and another page for Class 2 but that seems to suggest that it *doesn't* apply if you live abroad.

Anyway, if anybody has the right link that would be very helpful - thanks in advance!

@tinydbass I'm looking for the same info. I paid back 18 years last March in one big payment. It took until recently to show up on my account. Thrilled to see it on screen. Can't figure out when and how to pay the yearly amounts going forward. Must be one due now.

You'll get a letter every year around April / May-ish time for the previous tax year.

I shouldn't be surprised if this years is later than usual, given the current work load.

Thanks very much for the replies. I'm still at the point of paying back all the arrears (2006- now). The letter I received contains two links, one for class 3 and one for class 2, but the class 2 one is confusing as it seems to point me off to another link because I'm overseas (i.e. Ireland). I see the IBAN etc on this page though.

If somebody who has successfully paid their arrears could forward on the exactly link (or bank details that they used) that would be fantastic.

Thanks again!

Go to the Key Post Step by Step Guide to applying for UK state Pension.

Follow the instructions in either post #3 or post #4, whichever suits your circumstances best.

As I am a revolut user I used the instructions in #4 by converting the exact amount of sterling I needed within the app and I then sent it to the account as shown in the post.

I followed that up with a phone call a week or so later and received oral confirmation that the transfer has been received and was credited to me. My online details won't be updated for some time yet I was also told, and that's fine.

As @DannyBoyD must be blue in the face from saying, or typing, at this stage there is hardly a piece of information being sought by people at this stage that cannot be found on the forum with a little careful searching and reading.

Thank you for the information. I have transferred the full amount so will follow up with a phone call next week to confirm they have received...that's of course if I can get through to speak to someone

Just wondering what the rough time frame for updating is. I called and they said yes can see payment and it's against my national insurance. I'm guessing they are swamped at the moment and the allocations for people is not priority and especially those nowhere near retirement age

I've read of some people having their records updated in a matter of days or weeks, and I've read of some being advised it may take a year. As you've confirmed receipt of payment I suggest you relax and check it maybe once a month or so, unless of course you're approaching draw down age.

I'm not concerned about when mine is updated as I have almost 11 years (hopefully) before it becomes relevant.

@mugsymugsy I rang this morning, about an hour on hold - they said mine won't be updated online till September at the earliest. As you suspect they are prioritising those nearest to retirement. I had already rung a few months ago just to check they had my payment as it hadn't been updated. I paid in March 2024 for context. When they finally did update it during the last month they had allocated my payment (for 17 years) to the year 23/24 - which I hadn't even applied for yet. Apparently this has happened a lot. It will get sorted but its not simple is it? Definitely worth the call this morning!

I sent a bank transfer in GBP for 13 years class 2 payments from Revolut on the evening of Monday 07-April, past the deadline.

What do you think will happen?

Will penalties apply?

If any of the years were after 2019/20, you paid before the final time limit shown on your class2 payment letter from HMRC. I think these will deffo be allowed but as you were after the payment date without penalty, they may charge a penalty.
I am not sure about those before 2019, these are after the final time limit for payment
I suggest call them to clarify, you will need to write a letter as well, to advise them which year's to pay

The payments were for the 13 years from 2006/07 to 2018/19.

Well, the amount reflected the totals due for those years, but of course the payment didn't contain any instructions about which years to apply them to.
