Hi, We had a new patio put down about 4 months ago, It is indian sandstone. We were told to put down a sealer but also told not to. At the moment parts of it have turned green and I have used jeyes fluid and the hose to clear it partially. What I would like to know is if anyone else used a product to clear the green stains and also if anyone could reccomend a good sealer as I think I should use one now as soon as I have it back to its original standard, Thanks in advance, Salaried.

Hi,

I usually use "chlorus" (think that is the spelling)... find it very good... used mainly to clean milking parlours by farmers. Can't get it in usual DIY stores... just in the co-op stores.. strong stuff, so not too sure if it would suit for the slabs you have. Do you use a power washer to clean the slabs?

Regarding sealer - no idea on that...

Power washer cleans them fine. BUT if you use too much pressure or hold the nozzle too close it will leave marks and lift grouting etc, Use with care.

Thanks Jazz and AlbacoreA, I know of clorus, I did not think of that cheers. I powerwashed twice but not any more, We spent a lot of money on it and do not want it lifting by pushing out the grout, Again thanks for your replies Alba and Jazz.

Sandstone sealer

We have sandstone paving on our patio and used Thompsons Sandstone Seal to seal it. I applied it with a roller and did 2 coats. It comes in 2.5 or 5 litre cans and costs around €24 ( for the 2.5 ltr ) in B&Q or from paving suppliers. Before sealing it is best to clean the patio with a special cleaner. I can't remember the one I used but I think I bought it in Homebase and it came in dissolving sachets. It was good to get rid of the green algae - luckily we didn't have much of that as we sealed the sandstone pretty quickly. Our neighbour next door also got sandstone paving done last year but didn't seal it and the algae is worse. I think it would be a good idea to wash and seal it once a year, preferably when the weather is dry for a few days.

The cheapest washing powder you can find works really well... no idea why. Recently used a few boxes of it and it cleared the green and black dirt really well. You need to put the wp down when you know it going to be dry for a few days then just wash off... light power wash really helps.
