Painting woodwork, white or off white?

We're finally getting around to painting the woodwork in our house- skirting boards, architraves and doors. The doors are white already but the door frames and skirting boards are really cheap looking and am really hoping this will brighten them up (thinking of putting house on the market.) Just wondering, always had it in my head to do the woodwork an off white but both painters who quoted us said that white was the only thing they'd ever seen used. Also thinking of doing stairs- that's banister and spindles, we have a mink coloured carpet. Just wondering if any of you have done this, and what colour did you use?

What i did is take off the old ones and replaced them with unfinished white deal boards and put pine varnish on them has to be a good varnish as the ones you have is only sprayed on stuff like the walls when you move into a new house they are all spray painted with cheap paint.

I'm reading through this book at the moment. Great for inspiration.

The two painters you spoke to must have had very limited lives. I've seen - and personally done - woodwork in all sorts of colours. (An apple green was particularly admired).

However if your doors are white I wouldn't do the woodwork an off-white, the white doors will make the door-frames look dirty. If you are going to do the woodwork a different colour you should go for a contrasting colour. However if you are painting with a view to reselling white would probably be the best option as it would probably be cheaper and appeal to the most people.

We went with warm white from Dulux instead of white (we had white previously and found it a bit cold looking), much prefer the warm white look.

In our last house we painted the woodwork a cream colour. It was lovely. Would have done it this time around again except for we have white PVC windows.

if your selling the house do it in white.its clean reliable and wont have an effect on different peoples taste...
