I am 30, currently two years into ortho to correct an overbite. At the current phase in my treatment plan, we are using elastics to retrain the TMJ muscles and encourage my lower jaw to come forward to meet my upper (upper has been widened and corrected). The elastics are fine, if a little fiddly! Depending on how this goes, I may be a candidate for Orthgnatic surgery (jaw realignment). I have seen several patients undergo this procedure and the results have been quite remarkable (depending of course on how severe the profile was to begin with).
It is major surgery and the recovery period can be hard work, but the results are well worth it.
