OPF/FIS query

Hi

I work part time and am getting FIS. I have just applied for OPF allowance and think I am entitled to a part payment.

My question is this. Assuming I get the OPF payment, when my next review for FIS comes up, will they take the OPF into account and reduce the FIS? If that's the case, surely then the OPF would then have to increase as the income it is based on would have been reduced? And if that IS the case are you then locked into a cycle with one reducing, the other being raised etc etc every time there is a review?

I hope I have made the question clear, I know it sounds a bit mad but I can't think how it would work.

OPFP is taken into account when calculating what FIS payment you receive.

FIS is not taken into acount when calculating OPFP.

They calculate your OPFP from your earnings/income, then they calculate how much FIS is payable.

If you get rent supplement, they calculate that after OPFP and FIS has been calculated, as both these payments are taken into account for SWA/rent supplement.

So there is no cycle. I hope that's clear enough for you.

I would also add that if you applied for your OPFP prior to applying for FIS, and your OPFP is backdated to prior to the date you applied for FIS, then your FIS would be re-calculated to include the OPFP, and any overpayment from FIS would be taken from your backdated OPFP.

If that makes sense :)

This also means that if you are not in receipt of either payment, and become eligible for both payments, that you would be best appyling for Family Income Supplement first before applying for One Parent Family Payment.

Your FIS will then be calculated at a higher rate, and will continue for the year, even though you subsequently apply for One Parent Family Payment which if you had applied for it before you applied for FIS, would have reduced your payment.

hi i applied for fis at the start of feb this year. . . would you have any idea how much longer i'd be waiting . . i received a letter from fis about 4 weeks ago asking for one last bit of information, i sent it in straight away . . .

About 4 months at the minute is usual. You should be nearly there :)
