Tax relief claims on medical expenses remained the highest incidence of claims.

So the most claimed tax reliefs are for medical expenses. I find it is easier than ever to claim since a lot of my medical receipts are emailed to me by my GP/dentist, so I don't have to keep track of printed receipts.

Sorry if this is obvious, but how do you lodge a claim for medical expenses and is it possible to claim for past years, if so, how many years can you go back?

When I follow the steps for previous years, as per the link, I end up in this cul de sac outlined below in myAccount.

Note I am a PAYE worker and did not lodge a Tax return in 2023, but I still want to claim the medical expenses.

I think i know the problem. Up to and including 2022, I was filing tax returns via an accountant as I had a rental property. I always included my medical expenses in that process.

In 2023, I no longer have said property, so am just a basic PAYE worker from a tax perspective. I did not file a tax return for 2023 as I don't think I need to, as a basic PAYE worker.

So I think, from a revenue perspective, they may still view me as "self assessed" as I have not notified them or changed anything wrt to the above - I just didn't file a 2023 return.

I have made an enquiry with revenue on it.

Am I on the right track?

Sounds like it. Asking Revenue is most likely the best course of action alright.

@candyman, you need first to cancel their self-assessment registration with effect from the end of 2022. Use Form TRCN1 if you can't do it on ROS.

Not being melodramatic, but lots of bad things including tax demands and loss of tax clearance are likely to happen sooner or later if you don't.
