Hi all, not sure if i have the correct forum here so feel free to move mod's!

I have recently been put on temporary short time contract (3days).
I have been asked by my employeer to work an extra day this week but i have a couple of queries with this,

1. if i do this extra day i lose my JSB for this week, however i will actually end up being down money because of my petrol expenses so i'm wondering do i have to agree to work? the 4th day?
I agreed to a change of contract for 3 day week, not 4 days, does this matter?

2. i've just been asked today which is a bit short notice for me, do they have to give me a set amount of notice?

Also just wondering if i'm asked lets say to work a full week, that wont upset my JSB payments any other weeks only the week i work full time is this correct? And also what notice should i be getting for this as well, eg. can they ask me on the Wed to work the Thurs and Friday, as this really isn't enough notice for me.

Thanks

I've moved your thread to the Work, Careers and Employment Rights Forum as your query is mainly related to the rights of the employer to give such short notice. A copy will remain for one month in the Welfare Forum also.

You could try speaking to [broken link removed] to find out your rights with regard to the 3 or 4 day week and prior notice etc.

You may be able to run a search on www.welfare.ie with regard to the welfare aspect.

The search option on the main page of AAM may give you some relevant previous threads also.

This demonstrates the problems caused by rigidity of the system. It should be possible to issue a Notification to Social Welfare when there is a temporary deviation from the three day week.

It is one of more extensive issues which make up the claw-back wedge which makes it more difficult to move from welfare to work. These include loss of benefits such as the Medical Card.

There should be provision for graduated reduction of benefits in the transition to full employment. Working an occasional fourth of fifth day should be part of such transitory arrangements.

Yes, it's an issue the DSP are trying to get a handle on now. People placed on shorttime who are reluctant to take back up extra days now they are on offer due to the level of comfort on p/t JSB and associated benefits.

I expect something in the budget on this.

The issue is actually only a cashflow one though really, if it's a case where the situation is likely to continue for the medium term.

The OP loses a couple of days JSB in the present week, but since JSB entitlement runs out after a finite number of days, it just means it will be an extra week at the end of her claim before her JSB entitlement runs out...

Of course, that isn't much use to someone who depends on the JSB money NOW...!

Surely we could have a process where the employer makes the adjustment.

Where extra days are worked, pay the employee and refund the appropriate benefit amount to the Department. That would make the process easier for the employee with fewer visits to the hatch and less stress.
