The ex-Krajina has been subject to the strongest scrutiny from national and international monitors, moreso than most other areas of the country. For example, nothing is mentioned about the more than a million unexploded mines in the Dubrovnik area, or that many properties in the area were taken from former owners who are now battling through the courts to get them back, or worse still the impending showdown in Istria with Italians who were stripped of property in 1945. In any former commie country it can be awkward, but we have never sold anyone short and continue not to do so.

While this seems like a clever idea on the expectancy of Cyprus being part of the EU, it is still a big gamble. Have you been there? I have and even if Turkey as a nation leaves Cyprus, there is no guarantee the Turkish Cypriots will just walk away. Remember there is a UN peacekeeping zone in between the two. Also it will take a long time to get the tourist industry going there, I mena the Turkish half of the Capital is a ghost town and will take alot of money to be developed. The bulidings are still standing but there is nothing in them. Quite eary actually. Maybe looking at the Greek side of Cyprus might be easier. Also if Turkey do join the EU, you are talking about 70 million plus people from a different religion and culture to the west of Europe so it is very difficult to tell whether this will have a particularly positive effect on the EU economy as a whole.
 
I'm sure that once the situation settles further the place could very well take off, it could be like Montenegro which is in a bit of limbo right now and probably won't see the EU until after Croatia (after 2010). Is there a chance that when Turkey comes into the EU that the island will see migrants from there? I know that I read reports that the 10 newbies, esp Malta and Cyprus, were having to deal with large number of "asylum seekers", this might also prove a struggle.
