The ESB Networks (?) leaflet sent out before they install the smart meter really could do a better job of explaining some of the issues mentioned in this thread. It does say something like "your existing contract with your supplier isn't affected" but it doesn't clarify that the smart meter is effectively still a regular meter (and, in the case of nightsaver users, effectively still a night/day meter) until you actively choose otherwise - by enabling smart services via a provider after which your only option is to select smart tariffs. It also doesn't explain how you can use the button on the meter to cycle through screens in order to see the night and day readings ("T1" and "T2" respectively).
I contacted the CRU to ask them about this stuff but just got an auto reply email saying that they'd get back to me in 10 days - about a month ago.
