HI,
We are having a new porch installed, basic pvc door with floor to ceiling glass on both sides to maximise light. We will only be staying within our existing area, i.e. roof already in place so not extending further out. The guys giving quotes suggested that the door should open out. I think they felt there wouldnt be enough room to open in.

To me it doesnt make sense having it open out on to the driveway. Does anyone have one like this? Are there any pitfalls to this? I think the new door would be 800ml and there is 900m space so it can open in. I'd prefer to have it open in.
Any suggestions??

your door, and of course opening in , is always good as it implies that your inviting people in to your home

As clonboy says, it's your door.

Consider also what might happen in bad weather, especially high winds. There's a reason why most doors open inwards.

A colleague of mine recently looked at buying a house that had an outward opening front door and said she felt it was a security risk, as it's much easier to slam a door shut on someone trying to push their way into your house than pull a door closed on them. I hadn't thought of it before, but I think it's a good point.

Thats a very good point dubgem.
As the others say, our door so we choose!! I couldnt think of any benefits to the door opening out but the builder guy was saying it allows us better room in the porch but its still only a walk through, not like you're going to be hanging around in the porch!

Front door should open in, not to have to shove your guests back away from the door so that you have enough room to open the door to let them in. If you have'nt enough room for the door to open in then do open it out, I have often come accross this, but once you have the room to open it in definately open it in even if its only an inch or two to spare when you open it in.

French Doors (Double Doors) & Fire Escape Doors should always open out.

As previously said, your house, you will be using it for a long time, the salesman will be long gone.

Thanks NHG. We've picked a contractor from one of the quotes and he is going to have the door opening in. He didnt think there was any problem with it so I cant figure out why another one would be pushing for it.
Thanks for the feedback.
