New career ideas at age 60!

good as a rest" comes to mind.......

My current job resulted in me getting sick last year and I needed some time away. I'm back working now but wondering if I can do this for much longer. I'm wondering if I'm just tired of my core profession or if I am tired of applying that core skillset with my current employer. "A change is as good as a rest" comes to mind.......maybe!
Sorry to hear that Uafasach. Do you have plans on how to step back? Is it easy to find a job at the level you want elsewhere?

Im planning to retire soon. I could keep working but feel I need a break - loooong break — from my job. Once you feel this way I think it’s probably time to go.
I’d love to do something different but don’t have a clue what so love this thread, Lots of ideas
I’d like something part time with a social aspect to it.
I think as said previously that you’re probably better off to be at something

My retirement idea might be to design a website that people in the semi retirement phase match up with those looking for their skills. Anyone want to join me in this endeavour?!
That idea actually occurred to me a couple of years ago. It already happens of course through word of mouth and connections etc but the potential pool must be much wider and deeper.

There must be thousands of retirees with valuable skills who want to maintain at least some informal or casual connection with the world of work.

Equally, I imagine employers would welcome the opportunity to dip into a pool of expertise as they require without all the hassle that goes with taking on salaried staff.

The challenge is how to connect the two groups.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to work after "retirement". If you're forced by financial circumstances that's one thing but going "hey, I've retired from my job, what kind of a job will I draw a salary for next?" is just nuts to me. Work to live!!

Then again I already have plenty of things outside of work to fill my time once I can finally give up the grind. Work in the house, travel, work in the garden, exercise classes, travel, library, Netflix/Disney Plus, learning languages, travel, travel, travel.....

Anyone trying to think what they're going to do in retirement clearly clearly focuses too much on their job right now in my view. Go and spend the next few years finding things you get joy from outside of work rather than trying to figure out which job you could enjoy more than your present one. You've already had your entire career to figure out the "job I'd like to do" question!!

I think I will live my live in a pre retirement phase for a while...finish work in a busy corporate job that I enjoy and pays well, then wind down to something less intense before fully stopping employment. Maybe that is what a lot of replies on here are thinking?

Currently, just at the 'thinking' stage! Working for a US multinational has it's pros and cons.

I reckon it will be 2026 Q1 before I finally make a decision. It will be easy to get another job but will I just swap one set of problems for another!?

I stopped working to be a full-time stay at home parent. Despite having small kids at home to keep somewhat busy, I absolutely hated it. Since then, I have been working part-time (self employed). For me, it's a better balance. Still travel as I was away 9 weeks last years. But even travelling becomes sort of routine when you do it too often I find. My kids are now older and I am towing with the idea of finding something more in terms of work. While my part-time work somewhat helped the household finances, we absolutely don't need more money...

What type of self employment do you do? It sounds ideal to have control about how much you put into work

working in some form or another in a library or museum would strike me as being a lovely way to work when I am older.

The National Gallery of Ireland has a volunteer programme.

So if you go into the gallery, the person on the reception desk is likely to be a volunteer.

They were oversubscribed as far as I know. But there are plenty of other galleries around the country where you could offer your services.

It's very common in American public museums. You might be looking at a work and an elderly person approaches you asking if you would like to know more about the work.

Loads of volunteer opportunities in pretty much any cultural institution or sporting organization but I think a lot of people are looking for paid - even very low paid - work. This would give PRSI contributions or just a sense of value to their time and time-boxing the work

Libraries are busy places these days whenever I'm in them. Often filled with very young kids and storytime events or older people looking for help printing out stuff. I think I'd go for a museum first myself! I'd imagine GAA clubs, if you've got an interest in that area, would be glad of someone to help administratively, even organising league matches and keeping track of contacts, paperwork, or IT bits whatever.

Teach one of my skills... As I said, low financial value but it keeps me somewhat busy, during the winter. I am mostly free during the summer... I find it tough when I don't travel!
