Was looking to buy new ride on lawn mower and was wondering how people are getting on with mulching mowers.Do they do a good job and does the benefit of not having to empty bag out weigh the cost of cutting more often?
Also has any one any thoughts on front deck mowers was looking at a stiga villa14 h.s.t. has any one used this machine?

I have no experience of them personally, but I've read that mulching is better suited when its drier then when its wet (like Ireland) . Perhaps it depends on how good the drainage is on your lawn etc.

husband uses mulcher all the time as quick drive around does it, however grass has to kept clipped short all the time as mulcher no good for grass that has grown like if away for hols etc. mulch supposed to be better than for lawn, also mulch is so fine never see in kids shoes, clothes etc. have no where to store grass clippings really as large lawn area and really putting it into black bin not an option as full with nappies/ashes.

dont have a ride on lawn mower but do have a mulcher lawn mower and wouldnt go any other way,a joy to use

As Petermack says, you have to keep the grass at a low enough level or the mulcher will keep clogging. They're great though if you can manage that particularly if you've a big area to cut. Makes a huge difference not having to keep emptying the bucket.

The only other problem with it is if you have lots of weeds in your garden, then by mulching you're nicely spreading their seeds all over your garden.

There are many brands of tractor lawnmower such as Mountfield and Jonsered that come with mulching kits as options though I would never go back to a mulcher because of :

Clippings all over your house, especially if you have kids.
Much more frequent cutting or you will be left with trails as long grass doesn't mulch well.
Unsuitable for wet weather.
Unsuitable for heavy, lush grass.
Grass clippings blown out on paths as you cut close to them which means more cleaning up.

I suppose the ideal tractor mower is the the one with a front mounted deck that also collects the chippings like the [broken link removed] range - pricey though.

I agree completely with demoivre.
I usually bag if I leave it a week. During our hot June I mulched every 3/4 days. Last week due to time constraints I mulched on Thursday after a week's growth and a number of wet days.
Clippings all over your house, especially if you have kids. & Grass clippings blown out on paths as you cut close to them which means more cleaning up. - I spent longer brushing inside and outside than I would have collecting.
Much more frequent cutting or you will be left with trails as long grass doesn't mulch well - The clippings were far too long as I had applied a feed in early June and long and lush grass really are a no-no.
Unsuitable for wet weather - Looked terrible after the downpour on Thursday. Still looks terrible as the clumps have turned brown now.
Unsuitable for heavy, lush grass. - The mower choked up on a couple of occasions.

In short, I am going back out this evening with a bag.
