This is a bit of a different one but please if anyone can help it would be appreciated.....

Bought an apartment 5 years ago with a friend in the boom times....i know

We have been renting it out since then, now i want to move into the apartment with my new girlfriend. But i was made unemployed 2 months ago. My mate who i bought it with is now living in Canada....

Would i be entitled to any mortgage interest relief if i move in? As part of a social welfare payement?

Is your girlfriend working full time? Under the current rules for Mortgage Interest Supplement, you won't qualify for MIS if she works 30 hrs per week or more, regardless of income.

Are you the only name on the mortgage, or is your friend still a co-mortgagee? There are examples on AAM where couples have separated and the person remaining in the family home can't get MIS until the house ownership has been resolved, so you might have similar difficulties.

Your best bet is to speak to a Community Welfare Officer - they are based at your local health centre.

he is still on the mortgage so it looks like it will be a no go.
