Medical Card for a child only.

Lads, is there any chance I could get a medical card for my 5 years old daughter with asthma?
We didn't get it because we have 2e over limit, but is there any chance I could do something or write something on the application so they could give the medical card or at least a gp visit card only for her?
The thing is we are both working, me and my husband, but after paying the bills we often don't have enough money to cover hospital expenses when she has asthma attack and we have to go to hospital + medicine expenses it is a way to much.
I really don't understand how come after paying all taxes, usc tax as well I still I am not entitled for any help when my baby girl is sick and needs a help

Medical cards can and do be allocated on compassionate grounds. My son has severe physical disabilities. We earn way too much to qualify under normal critera. Initially be it 20yrs ago ( son now in UCD) we applied for a medical card for him. We were refused. Did the rounds attending TDs clinics etc. He was awarded a card eventually for himself. The card was valid for two years. Over the years we have had to repeat our efforts over and over again in order to insure the card is renewed. Cant remember but off hand I think I have been in touch with 16 seperate TD,s in relation to my sons medical card.
I would suggest you attend your local TD,s clinic. Pick a FG or Labour TD as they are in the driving seat presently. Better still if you can actually make arrangements to attend Minister for Health Leo Vads clinic in Lucan all the better. Bring your little girl with you.
Whatever you do dont give up. Unfortunately this is the system we have to live with. Over a twenty year period nothing has changed.Fight hard and dont take no for an answer. Your little girl deserves better. Always keep a record of who you lobbied dates times etc.

Long shot but your user name might suggest your from Wexford. TD Brendan Howlin is very well connected through past portfolio to HSE.
He is one of many who sorted us out. Think he still has clinic Saturday morning in union hall Wexford town.

Yes it is possible. my son has a disability and we are over the income threshold for Medical Card(DH and I do have GP Visit Cards) but DS has a full medical card. When applying i sent off a letter confirming his diagnosis, included details of the extra costs associated with his condition, i.e private therapies, travel to and from hospital etc.

You can try a letter as shoppergal suggest. Dont be surprised if you get a refusal. Genuinely I wish you the best. If that does not work go to Mr Howlins clinic in Wexford town. Bring your little girl and her medical info/file and ask him to make representations on your behalf. Good luck.
