This country is drowning in debt. To continue to spend like they have in recent years, people would need to continue to accumulate debt far beyond their ability to service. Instead, sensibly, people are reigning in spending so that they can reduce their outstanding liabilities.
Once people get their debt down to more manageable levels they will go back to spending (although hopefully not at the bubble-like levels of previously).
But not until then.
