Hi,friends daughter is due to go abroad in two weeks.
She has had to carry her passport with her for a few years when out and about in town.
This has caused it to become damaged,ie;make up,a bit crumpled.
The photo and ID information is perfectly clear, however we wondered if the airport security would have an issue with it.
Do you think she should just go ahead,as its a valid if somewhat dirty passport,or try to get a new one before the 25th july?
Any experience of the above?

Where is she going?

If it's the US, I'd get a new one. They are complete tools about that sort of thing flying in there.

Most other places I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as the machine readable portion isn't crumpled (e.g. the bit with all the >>>> etc. stuff under the photo) then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thanks for the replys.

She is going to Malaga, and the machine readable portion isnt crumpled, the photos and ID are perfect too,but it really does look messy.

Just as an aside the passport website sayes, a passport cannot be replaced ,ie;a new one has to be issued. This would cost 80e and a charge of 50e could be applied if you need it quickly.

How long to go to expiry ?
If not long I think she should get a new one. Passports are very important documents and should not be abused. I have seen in the past where teenagers have used them to collect autographs.

would buying a 'cover' not suffice? you can get leather or leatherette passport covers that might take the scruffy look off the passport, if the data elements are okay then she'll be fine.

Those covers are really frowned upon by immigration officials of many countries.

I have used my passport with a 'nice pink cover' going through border controls on many european countries and have had no problems. The covers prevents make up etc getting on the passport and is very useful in covering up foundation marks etc! Trust me as I speak from experience!

Update on passport situation:

The travel agents think it should replaced as do the gardai.

So she went into the passport office with all the required documentation and even though she still has 2 years on it,it couldnt be replaced she had to get a new one.
This cost 80e and she will have it by next friday.
Thanks for all the replys and yes this one will be kept out of harms way!

Getting a new passport is replacing the old one. You hardly expected them to hand out a new free passport for the old one.

I would, the photo is important. If your photo is damaged then the passport can be refused.
