Hi,friends daughter is due to go abroad in two weeks.
She has had to carry her passport with her for a few years when out and about in town.
This has caused it to become damaged,ie;make up,a bit crumpled.
The photo and ID information is perfectly clear, however we wondered if the airport security would have an issue with it.
Do you think she should just go ahead,as its a valid if somewhat dirty passport,or try to get a new one before the 25th july?
Any experience of the above?

Where is she going?

If it's the US, I'd get a new one. They are complete tools about that sort of thing flying in there.

Most other places I wouldn't worry about it.

As long as the machine readable portion isn't crumpled (e.g. the bit with all the >>>> etc. stuff under the photo) then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Thanks for the replys.

She is going to Malaga, and the machine readable portion isnt crumpled, the photos and ID are perfect too,but it really does look messy.

Just as an aside the passport website sayes, a passport cannot be replaced ,ie;a new one has to be issued. This would cost 80e and a charge of 50e could be applied if you need it quickly.

How long to go to expiry ?
If not long I think she should get a new one. Passports are very important documents and should not be abused. I have seen in the past where teenagers have used them to collect autographs.

would buying a 'cover' not suffice? you can get leather or leatherette passport covers that might take the scruffy look off the passport, if the data elements are okay then she'll be fine.

I have used my passport with a 'nice pink cover' going through border controls on many european countries and have had no problems. The covers prevents make up etc getting on the passport and is very useful in covering up foundation marks etc! Trust me as I speak from experience!

Update on passport situation:

The travel agents think it should replaced as do the gardai.

So she went into the passport office with all the required documentation and even though she still has 2 years on it,it couldnt be replaced she had to get a new one.
This cost 80e and she will have it by next friday.
Thanks for all the replys and yes this one will be kept out of harms way!

Getting a new passport is replacing the old one. You hardly expected them to hand out a new free passport for the old one.

Is that a question or a statement? A renewal is very different to a replacement!!

For your information getting a new passport was a whole new application proceedure. As opposed to replacing the old one,ie; the issuing of a copy of same..

Where did I say I expected a "new free passport for the old one",please point me in the right direction?

Was birth cert provided or was old passport taken as form of proof for Irish citizenship. If it was the old passport then it is renewal ( but not same passport number )

It is only considered a "fresh application" you your old passport is so damamged that org LFC is required to prove citizenship.

You will only get a copy of the old one if it was the damage was the fault of the passport office. This will only cover the length of time remaining on the passport which was damaged in the 1st place.

I would, the photo is important. If your photo is damaged then the passport can be refused.

No she just had to bring in the soiled passport, and the forms and photos that the guards signed..
Thanks for the information,it does say on the passport website that replacements are no longer available, indicating that they were available at some stage which is what we thought may be available to her ,however its no longer that way,so its fine she got a new one.

Understandable that one would think a replacement could be had,at a price, when the passport has 2 years left, but this is not the case anymore.

No as the same amount of work goes into any passport and this time of year the chances of getting a replacment at a price is not possible (or any time ). Plus it is the duty of the holder to look after this VERY important document.

Therefore replacements are only given when a mistake is made by the passport authorities.

But its the fault of the pubs who will not take garda id. So lots of passports are lost and damaged by younger people with no option only to use them. Remember you have to do a theory test etc for a drivers licence so the passport is the easier option.

But if a few are lost or damaged you will end up with a 2 yr passport and if you lose that you could be down to 11 months.

Exactly, and this is what happened in her case..

Thanks for the heads up..
