I've seen this mentioned a few times in passing here but I think it's worth a thread of its own.
We have a monitored alarm on our home (private company - not Eircom Phonewatch) and have the monitored alarm discount on our home insurance. Our insurer (Aviva) confirmed to me that such an alarm must be covered by an ongoing maintenance contract in order for the insurance to remain valid. It was our alarm company that brought this to our attention by way of trying to sell a monitoring contract.
At renewal I'm going to compare the cost of the monitoring contract with the alarm discount as I'm not sure that a maintenance contract is entirely necessary.
But this seems to be common practice with a lot of insurance companies - if you have a monitored alarm discount on your home insurance, you must have a maintenance contract.
