Lost National Insurance Number - No Reply from HMRC

Only precautionary note, I just went in and took 2 mins with the receptionist and got mine as had addresses.

Not sure how more tricky cases or issues can be handled but they seemed helpful so hard to know

If it doesn't go well there is also CAB in Armagh, just a bit further, never used these but a friend is involved in another one and get the impression they are more "on your side"

If you never got a National Insurance number then you've fallen at the first hurdle
That wouldn't be great. I have a few years contributions so hopefully they can find them and with a bit of luck they'll have issued or can issue a National Insurance number given that I have a form that indicates I applied. Definitely worth the spin up North to check it out.

As this week may be when some people need to visit our friends in the North it might be worth maximising the value of the trip in case of no joy with DWP (DfC) office.

This is a list of Citizens Advice Centres who *might* be able to assist if Govt office can't. I'm told they will talk to anyone who arrives subject to how busy they are

Also social security offices, it's possible some will be more (ahem) approachable than others but presumably people will be looking at border locations

From HMRC forum, not very encouraging

Temporary National Insurance Numbers are just something that an employer would use on their payroll, until they are given a full National Insurance Number from their employee.
There is no register for a Temporary National Insurance Number so you may wish to speak with your employer about this.
However, your should give them your full National Insurance Number at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.
Also time pretty much up for NI number by post etc.

You will not be given your National Insurance number over the phone. It will be posted to you and can take up to 10 working days to arrive.

The quickest way to get your National Insurance number is through your personal tax account.

That bit about Temporary NI numbers is not encouraging. I'm going to head to Armagh tomorrow and see if they can find me and might try Newry too if no joy. I'm guessing it will be luck of the draw in terms of finding somebody helpful. I do have some Tax returns that I'd submiited and have some correspondence from them so I'm hopefully trackable. There's probably an argument that says once you've paid your contributions you're entitled to the benefits but we'll see. Have employers details too. It may be a lost cause but I reckon it's worth spending the day having a go given the upside.

Apologies - I’ve just seen the info on the last page of the form!

Hi folks, I’ve read through the many posts on this topic, and I want to give my details. I rang HMRC to get my NI number on 7/3/25, agent found me on system and said letter would be with me 10-15 working days. As of today no letter received. I’ve downloaded the CF83 form and am sending a cover letter with the form explaining lack of NI number from HMRC. My query is on the form, section 5 Volunteer Development Workers, is this relevant to employee here in ROI? It has me stumped.

Well done to everyone that has contributed their info and updates in particular DannyBoyD.

Was in Newry office and also popped across to Armagh but didn't really make any progress. Newry couldn't find any record of me even though I had documents with Income Tax assessments. Seems I had a temporary NI number and they said those get deleted after a while. She gave me a number to ring to apply for a NI number but no answer from that and even then they may not be able to find my contributions. Waiting on a call back from the UK and need to send more information to Newcastle in the hope they can find me but it's starting to look like a lost cause. Will still send in the CF83 with the NI number I have with a quick explanation in the hope that they'll be better able to find it but after that I think it's time to give up.

In the meantime, are you able to track down your old employers for whom you don't have paperwork? You should start that now in case you need it as evidence. Old bank statements etc. Anything at all that can prove you worked there.
