Planning to travel to France this weekend and considering options for travel insurance. We'll be there for 12 days.

Cover for 2 adults and 2 children.

Preferences:
1. Medical Cover (emergency cover, hospital)
2. Cover for travel disruption caused by strikes. I'll be flying with Aer Lingus so I'll like to get cover for disruption caused by strikes.

Would love to hear if anyone has any recommendations for insurance companies that cover travel disruption caused by strikes.

Based on old posts I've read E111 will not cover all medical costs -cost of ambulance , specialist procedures etc.

The E111 is now called the ECHI (European Health Insurance card) and covers you for public health treatment in the visiting country, which in the case of France is very good. If you have private health insurance (Vhi/Laya etc) there maybe some overseas cover.

Regarding disruption insurance the travel insurance would have to be taken out at the time of booking or before

Annual policies can be good value.
Such as just cover .ie

Especially if you have private health cover here. Repatriation is key if you are sick or injured.

Not sure about cover if your flight is cancelled, I know our ferry was cancelled once and they covered the couple of nights in a hotel while we waited for another one.

You don't have to have purchased cover at the time of booking to avail of disruption insurance, but the event giving rise to the claim must happen after the purchase. In the case of trips to France now, ensure cover is in place before any strike dates are announced.

I'm with Blue. And this has just popped up on their website:-

Due to the recent announcement regarding Aerlingus strikes:

Any policy purchased on or after the 13th of June 2024 will not cover claims arising from this industrial action.
For any policies purchased prior to the 13th June 2024, claims will be reviewed in line with the policy terms and conditions.

I have travel insurance that comes with my credit card which is underwritten by Chubb

In the section that deals with travel delay, abandonment/missed connection it states
"We will not pay if strike or industrial action could be reasonably expected or foreseen when a trip is booked and the fare is paid"

So I'd reckon most travel insurance companies would be more or less similar in cover

Is there any chance you already have travel insurance, for example via one of Revolut's paid-for services?

EHIC

In case anybody has car + house insurance from AVIVA Direct, you can get free travel insurance added.
