I got an interview for a local authority - they will probably ask questions on powers of concillers and county manager - where could i find infomation on this?

Depending on the level of job you are going for, they will more than likely ask some of questions about the role of the L.A. i.e. do you know what L.A.s actually do - Roads maintenance, waste management (in some areas), water supply, drainage, control of dogs, housing issues etc etc etc. I'd advise you do a bit of background reading on this stuff if you are going for an admin post. There should be lots of info on the website. Make sure you know the who's who of the council itself - county mayor etc. Best of luck with it anyway

The Dept. Environment, Heritage and Local Government produced a very useful booklet in 2004 entitled 'Local Government and the Elected Member'.

It's a useful guide to the workings of local authorities explaining the structure, functions, management, membership, etc. and it's written in an easy-to-understand format.

You can probably still obtain a copy of this booklet from Government Publications Office and it says on the inside cover it costs 5 euro. You could also contact the Department directly and they might forward you a free copy.

Best of luck with your interview.

Aswell as knowing the functions of a Local Authority you should also know a couple of details of issues specific to that Council, things that have been in the media etc. If you check their websites most have a press release section. I would say that overall what is in the news in Dublin particularly has been issues with Environment, ie Waste charges recycling, and housing issues - affordable housing/social housing. Maybe contact or call into the civic offices and see if they have something with the specific lingo (Corporate Plan?) detailing management/Councillor functions
