Lining a chimney

Hi,

I checked the old chimney posts but can't see anything relating to this so maybe someone can give me some advice.

I moved into an older house which we renovated. It used to have an open fire, but we installed a gas fire instead. Now our neighbour is saying that they are getting a smell from the gas residue coming down their chimney (and that it's coming from our gas fire). They are saying it's probably because the chimney needs to be lined.

Anyone ever had to line a chimney? How do you go about it? Any ideas on cost? First of all I have to check that what the neighbour is saying is correct so I'm going to have someone from the gas company round to make sure we don't have any leaks etc. How do I check if my chimney needs to be lined?

All a bit nightmarish. We've just spend thousands on renovations - I'm horrified at the thoughts of having to do more if this is a big job.

You don't say if you're semi-detached? Or even if your house is? ;-)

There could be another, simpler cause. If the chimney pots are near each other it could just be downdraught from yours to theirs.

You could consider a chimney cowl with a directional outlet. Swivel it around into various positions and check with your neighbours.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I'm semi-detached (as is my house) :) The chimneys back on to each other. So how does it work if it's a downdraft? the emmissions from my gas fire are going up my chimney and down my neighbours? Didn't realise that could happen. Okay, I think I'll try the cowl thing first - thanks for that advice. The neighbour is being rather snippy about it so it's a bit tricky. Don't want them to have a gas residue smell obviously, but there isn't a lot of proof that it's coming from us. Apparently no-one else can smell it, and they haven't gotten an expert to check if there are emissions, so we're being asked to go to all this expense, just on their say-so.

Also, does anyone know if chimney experts can check if your chimney needs to be lined? I guess there's a way to prove our chimney is worn out?

I have just had a chimney in an investment property (a terraced stone cottage) re-lined today by a guy called Tim from Templemore Chimney Specialists 087 2647582. They arrived as said before 9am and were finished and cleaned up at 3.30pm. They re-lined it the traditional way with flue liners, they even replastered the wall where they had to open it up and took away all the rubble.

I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship, there were four men and each and every one of them were very tidy, friendly and obliging which is hard to find these days.

No connection in any way, just a very satisfied customer.

Why would your chimney be worn out and not theirs?

What was the cost, I need to get eight liners done in an old old house in sandycove.
