Looking to give a second hand softwood table a new look.

Someone mentioned to me about giving it a lime wash finish that will still show up the knots in the timber.

It is presently untreated and it will need some prep work before giving it a new look.

I would prefer not to varnish it.

Any advice welcome
 
What kid of wood is it, and in what sort of condition? Limewash can look a bit naff. If it is nice wood, you could oil and wax it, possibly stain it first if it is unevenly coloured.

I think you are right. All I have been told that it is some kind of a softwood, my guess is pine as I have sanded areas and it is lightly coloured.

Yes dizet, I think it will need to be stained first. Limewash finish is out. I will stain and varnish the table top and chair seats and paint the legs and back of chairs white, as per that photo. There are some old liquid stains that will may still remain. The table was never given protection to date.

The condition is such that the whole table will need a good sanding down initially anyway.

So could anyone recommend the steps in order for both staining/varnishing and the painting in order to achieve what I need as per the photo.
 
The table is now sanded but there appears to be previous liquid stains, light yellow in colour. Any ideas how to cover this up before applying a finish quote.
 
Very dilute solution of Peroxide perhaps? (test it out somewhere that is going to be painted first).

If you can't get rid of the stain (and you are going to put glass on your table anyway), you could think about putting a good quality Irish Linen underneath the glass. What they call a 'tray cloth' would be a handy size.

I can't think why your post on glass for the table was locked, where else would it go except homes & gardens...anyway to answer your post - contact any local glazier firm.

They will be able to cut a sheet of glass to go on top of your table; tip - get them out to measure the table and ask them to deliver it also. If your table is about the size of the one in the photo, I'm guessing you are looking at something around €150, but it's well worth it to protect the table top.

I have used this paint to update several items and cant recommend it enough - no undercoat needed just pain it staright on. There are two stockists of it here in Ireland but they both offer to post the paint to you.
 
Me, I'm a Colortrend fan! :)

Excellent on furniture also, I particularly like the eggshell finish for wood.

There would be a much wider range of colours & of course it doesn't have to be posted! :)

They have a factory outlet in Celbridge.

Hm... ye see I'd have considered that to be for something very specific; like where can I buy a left-handed scissors?

Whereas to the question 'where can I buy soap powder'? The answer would be more generic - your local supermarket.

Anyway, it's idle chat; not getting too worried about it! :)
