Leinster vs Bath 18 Jan 2025

My argument is that football is a superior game .
I think what you are actually doing is offering your subjective opinion that soccer is a superior game (both are forms of football). Some posters, my included, having read your posts, have formed the subjective opinion that your opinion lacks objectivity, and that the root cause of said lack of objectivity may be a predisposed inverted snobbery.

Soccer or Football was a more honest game when great players like George Best , Denis Law , John Giles , Bobby Moore etc were playing. Ok there was no nonsense tackling and on bad pitches , most of the time, but the skill was pretty good and the money wasn't that good either. Nowadays even with great players like Messi, Ronaldo etc they get paid unnatural sums of money for , in effect cheating , in my opinion. The one thing they are very talented at is diving . Mind you if they keep at it they might enter , football diving , as an Olympic sport...

That’s a distasteful assumption.
I’m not approaching this thread from a position of ignorance of the game of Rugby.
As I have pointed out on many occasions on this site I warrant that I have attended more Irish International Rugby tests than many on this site by dint of entertaining clients due to my previous occupation and have been bored out of my executive box .
My knowledge is such that I , at least , know the difference between laws and rules !!
My argument is that football is a superior game .
That's why you were bored, get down in to the crowd amongst the real fans and enjoy the craic and banter!

John Giles was a marvellous footballer and it was a joy to see him in his pomp but he undoubtedly was one of the dirtiest players I’ve ever seen and Denis Law knew his way around a tackle as evidenced by the lengthy suspensions he served.
Winter football in these Islands was a joke with pitches bordering on the dangerous , I always remember Derby’s baseball ground resembled a swamp.
As the scourge of widespread hooliganism receded in the 90’s and the popularity of the game increased exponentially with the huge increase in TV revenue everything improved in terms of better pitches , massively increased attendances & increased salaries with teams like Barcelona , Real Madrid, City , Bayern , Liverpool et al producing football of a quality never seen before .
VAR although controversial at times has eliminated cheating at the highest level , diving in the box is now more likely to rewarded with a yellow card rather than a penalty .
I’ve always been wary of labelling players as divers given the speed of the modern game players are liable to be knocked off balance by the faintest knock .
Perhaps diving could be paired with eye gouging & high tacking to create a truly ecumenical triathlon ?

What and pay to get in , not likely
Apparently it’s impossible to watch the game amongst the hoi polloi these days with the levels of drunkenness and people heading in and out to get gargle .

Players had to be skillful playing in grounds like Baseball ground and also when trying to get around players like John Giles, Norman Hunter, Nobby Stiles
etc. If a player went down from a tackle then it was a, real , tackle and if he got up he was lucky .....or good...not like nowadays. Not enough players get booked for diving or having someone 'breathing' on their necks, Var or no Var.

That’s because there is little or no advantage to diving due to VAR hence few bookings .
Undoubtedly players back in past times were skilful but not at the same skill levels we see now .

But there wasn't any diving in the past either., if players went down they were really tackled. Most of the bookings in today's games for tackles are unfair because the player going down, as if they had been hit by a 'bus' are conning the referees...and it goes on and on.
If a rugby player goes down he usually has blood pouring from somewhere..

The vast majority of yellow cards are issued for reckless tackles , tackles from behind and cynical fouls to deny a goal scoring chance .
VAR has seen a huge decline in diving in the box as penalties simply won’t be awarded .
VAR has also made players aware that they are being monitored, players are not stupid and are cognisant of the fact that a reputation as a diver is not going to play well with refs .
At the respective World cups for Football and Rugby interestingly discipline was a factor more in Rugby than Football with 7 red cards in 48 games as opposed to 4 in 64 games in football.
The worst fears of the Rugby authorities were realised as the majority of the red cards were for head high tackles including one that virtually decided the final.

The needless diving that I refer to is all over the pitch, not in the box in particular.
The diving in the box has been reduced due to Var..

The fact that the game is now so fast that the slightest contact can throw a player off balance and refs are quite aware of this and can differentiate between a foul and a dive .
Diving has been virtually eliminated by VAR.

We will have to agree to disagree on this...

Apologies to @Leo for overlooking his creative writing contribution; you first mentioned players built like fridges.
Yes , I’m happy to confirm that I did indeed reply to Leo’s mention of fridges by subsequently mentioning fridges myself !!!!

Meanwhile for the true sports fans who like to see an Irish team, any Irish team, do well, Leinster will be playing Harlequins in Croker at 2pm on the 5th of April and Munster have a daunting trip to Stade Marcel Deflandre to face La Rochelle at 5.30 the same day.
