My renewal for two adults is €280 a month Ages 65 and 62. Anyone suggest an alternative that's cheaper with much the same equivalent cover. ( I miss SnowyB's contributions to health insurance queries ).

Laya Inspire is cheaper and almost the same cover as Inspire Plus. In fact, other than a couple of higher overnight in-patient excess charges it's virtually the same policy. You can compare them side by side on the Laya website.

Or you could look at Level Health Plan C - not sure how that compares but it's in the same ballpark.

Remember you have 14 days cooling off period from the start of renewal, so no rush.

I moved from flex 500 to Prosper.

Not a big difference in benefits

I am considering moving from LAYA Inspire Plus to VHI PMI 1011. Some slightly bigger excesses with the PMI1011 plan, but the cost is €1400 compared to the €1632 cost for LAYA Inspire Plus.

Interesting.

Yes there sure are differences on the bigger excesses and I note that the overall limit on day-to-day is €7,650 on the Inspire Plus and €3,200 on the PMI1011.

Can anyone here explain this rule with Laya as I can't quite get my head around it:

Inspire Plus day-to-day expenses
This is the maximum amount you can claim on your policy for out-patient benefits per year

€7,650; the maximum refund is €1,000 per member for everyday medical expenses.

I've seen this restriction mentioned a few times with Laya so just wondering what exactly does that mean? Even though the overall allowance is €7,650 per policy or plan for day-to-day, each individual on that plan can only claim €1,000 each which seems very strange

My understanding is the Outpatient cover of €7650 is for all non overnight stay surgeries, scans, consultants appointments etc.
In the above policy the maximum of that €7650 that can be claimed for day to day expenses is €1000.
In Simplicity eg the full €7650 can be claimed as long as the patient has no other outpatient claims.

That's not a particularly cheap policy @ €1,632.94 so very poor cover if max that can be claimed on day-to-day is €1,000. Does anyone know if VHI have something similar?

In a recent podcast Dermot Goode recommended looking at Laya SimplyHealth Extra as an alternative to Inspire Plus. At €1577.67 It's cheaper and in most areas has the same or slightly lower excesses. Also there's no limit on Day to Day, just the €7650 O/P limit.

So we decided to change my husband's policy over to SimplyHealth Extra from Inspire Plus. We were tempted by Levelhealth Plan C but their poor start up customer service put us off. Happy with the change we made.

VHI PM 4316 worth a look imo

As a relative has that plan I had a look at it last year as it seemed good value. Guy in VHI mentioned that you need to be careful about the cover for Galway Clinic and Hermitage and this is what is shown on HIA. It does appear to apply to Special Procedures though but worth checking it out with VHI to be on the safe side.

Private Hospital Semi-Private Room

Covered with €150 Excess per claim except 90% cover for Special Procedures in Galway Clinic and Hermitage with €150 Excess per claim; 80% cover for certain orthopaedic and ophthalmic procedures

Private Hospital Private Room

Semi-private rate with €150 Excess per claim, except 90% of semi-private rate for Special Procedures in Galway Clinic and Hermitage with €150 Excess per claim; 80% cover for certain orthopaedic and ophthalmic procedures

Can I ask, for a relatively healthy 57 year old person, is it necessary to have access to the Dublin clinics - Blackrock, Mater?
I am in Galway, and if hte policy covers the Bons and the Galway clinic, I think that I am okay, is this a reasonable approach?

Hi trident,

The two hospitals that you mention in Dublin, Blackrock and presumably Mater Private, are the especially dearer hospitals because for example Blackrock has all private rooms and no semi-private.

To ensure that you are covered for your local hospitals it would be best to discuss this with your insurer.
