Laptop Recommendation

Looking for a laptop recommendation, I saw the key post
Was looking at Dell as they seem to be the best option

Not looking for anything massive just something to use when browsing the net
sending mails and a good memory for storing files, music and the odd movie

Don't want to go way over budget as have Desktop also

Have windows xp and all the necessary firewall and av protection
so don't need that

Do Dell sell them without these ?

Checked their website and could not see also phoning / email them is headwrecking

If there are any other recommendations out there were I could buy them, just looking for views

I would shop around a bit more before making a decision. PCWORLD have some great offers on laptops at the moment, if there is one near you recommend going in and having a look.

Bought a laptop for a friend recently (last weekend), and compared specs etc to dell against pcworld, and found pcworkd to have a better overall range and price (I may be wrong on this, it is just my opinion).

Also, I tend to think if you can buy something locally its always a bit more re-assuring, as you have someone to thump if things go wrong. Cant do that online :D

Online shopping is great though, but not always the best option.

I recently got a hp dx2133 for Eur999 in the laptop shop in st stephens green and that was as good a deal i could find. i probably could have got something cheaper on dell but i preferred the look of the HP plus it has a good spec. i also checked it out against laptopsdirect.ie but it depends on what u want.
I have 2*amd turion
120 gig HD
1 GD ram
wifi, dvd rw
windows media player etc
happy with it so far, beats the hell out of my old pc.

you could pick up a basic one for circa eur 600 if you just want a basic one

any large d/l I can do on the Desktop PC

Keeping an eye on the Dell outlet as want something basic

The DELL Inspiron 1501 for 499euro including vat and shipping seems good value. As a basic notebook, its spec seems ok. Am thinking of getting one myself for casual use.
Its: Mobile AMD Sempron processor 3500+, 512MB RAM, 40GB, 14.1" XGA screen, dvd combo, dell wireless card 802.11b/g, XP home.

Is there any cheaper entry level deals out there?

I saw that on their website and was wondering if you (or anyone else for that matter) saw any problems with the spces for this one just for browsing web, emailing and that kind of thing. I am not making music or downloading films or anything that energy consuming,

I see no problem whatsoever. Im replacing an old dell inspiron 7500 6yrs old which im using for the purpose stated, and its spec is about 1/3 the speed and 1/10 the disk space and it does the job you mention just fine as it is.Also the 512MB ram is plenty (using XP) for all these mundane applications.
Obvoiously would suffer on graphic or processor hungry applications, but the normal email, internet, broadband, office applications etc is no problem.

Would the specs on that new model, DELL Inspiron 1501, also be good enough to cover digital photography?
 
Not all the prices on the outlet are good. Theres some overpriced machines on there too. Just keep a good eye on the outlet and good deal will pop eventually. I wouldn't spend more than 500 incl vat & del on a laptop for what you are doing.

Roughly 860 euro brand new.

I think the bidding on the Dell outlet store was a bit high in the last 24 hours mainly becasue of the drought of laptops recently. The two that sold today went for higher than normal.
