Kruger Park advice required

well we are going with the option of flying into Nelspruit as its the best backpacking option and staying in the old vic
Looks like we will have to take the malaria tablets

However they have said that the Kruger park fees need to be paid up front and there would be no refund, touch woood if anything happened

Is this correct ?
 
yeah, we had to pay the fees up front cos when we got to the gate the staff just took the vouchers...there was no way of purchasing the vouchers there and then. Prob cos they need to know in advance how many visitors they are gonna have...

Might just wait until we get to PE before hiring out car from Hostel maybe ??
Have 10-12 days to kill on the Garden Route so it will be a slow & relaxing journey

Reading and talking to people looks like we will have to take malaria tablets
Do you have to take them a month before departure and do you keep taking them when you are over there ?
 
In most cases, you start taking the anti-malarial drugs a week before entering the malarial area and continue for four weeks after leaving. You'll need to get professional advice about which malarial tablets to take, and when you need to start taking them. The combination of anti-malarial drugs varies depending on where you're going due to resistance. I think the recommended combination was larium and paludrine when we were there last, but that may have changed. Some people can have quite a bad reaction to larium.
 
So they are not available over the couter they have to be subscribed ?

So looks like its a trip to the Doctor to get a prescription for the Malaria tablets

And it aint cheap to visit the doctor

Do you need any jabs for going to South Africa ?
 
One anti-mosquito method we used when we lived in Trinidad was to mix Citronella oil in Johnsons Baby oil ( to finish with a pale straw colour) and to rub this in over all exposed parts. Worked in Trinidad's Caroni Swamp so should be OK for Kruger.
 
I got my jabs for my holiday to South Africa yesterday, Im not going to Kruger, staying around the Cape Town area so dont need to worry about malaria. I had to get Hep A and Typhoid and a tetanus and polio booster, cost me € 120 in my local doctor's surgery, a friend of mine who is a nurse told me to go to my local doctor and avoid the tmb because they tend to be dearer.

Injections themselves didnt hurt (and im terrified of needles) but both arms are very stiff and sore today!!
 
You definitley need a prescription for anti-malarial drugs. You might be able to get it by just phoning your doctor rather than having to make a visit.

We didn't bother with any jabs last time we were there.

Try getting an insect repellent with deet in it. The mosquitos are worst around dusk.
