Is this a cheque scam?

This is the same scam recycled - in a couple of days you will get an email asking for some of the money to be returned for some reason, they will want to cancel part of the furniture, or need some of the money back for some spurious reason, so will ask you to transfer some of the money back by Western Union once the cheque has cleared.

You send the money out of your account as the cheque looks like it has cleared, but of course it has not because it is STG cheque it will look like the money is in your account, but when it turns out to be a fraud, bank debits your account a month or so later - and your money is long gone.

I would not even bother lodging the cheque at all, or at least do what BM has said, but to be honest, I would put the cheque in the fire and move on. out of curiousity wait and see exactly what the instructions are.

See if it involves the good old western union scam.

Apologies if this is already mentioned as I didn't get to read all the thread but wanted to point this out.
Be very careful. It may be a possibility that once you lodge the cheque the sender in some way will be able to obtain your bank details, and later clean out your account.
How much is the cheque for?

The collective wisdom says scam. Chalk it up to experience, and good AAM advice. (It's very unlikely that we are wrong in this case).

Why not google the contact details you have. You might find that this person is in a number of different countries at the same time and selling items from each location. Also might be an idea to send the details to scambaiters, they will waste the scammers' time and resources so that innocent people are left alone.

hey guys

appreciate all the replies. my boyfriends aunt checked the cheque out with their fraud dept in dublin. Definetly a fake. Then they rang the bank that issused the cheque in the UK and they've had other cases like it.
Only problem that they were worried about was my identity being used for fraud cos i sent them my cv.
So i flagged it up with my bank. Hopefully it'll be ok. Haven't heard anymore so far from the scammer so maybe they've been scared off.
Reported them to gumtree too!! definetly learned a lesson, so glad that i didn't lodge the cheque!

hey guys

Hadn't heard anymore so far from the scammer until thursday- him asking to confirm the cheque was received. So i ignored the email.

He emailed again today to ask if i can respond so i can start work. I wish he'd feck off. Would it be advised to email him back saying i kknow its a scam and stop contacting me?? I have a gmail account so i can't block him, only filter the emails.
