Is the cost of electricity still that high??

Hilarious reading there. It says the following:

'All households are to have €54 shaved off their electricity bill over the next year

'It will also be mostly swallowed up by an increase in charges announced last year, leaving a net benefit of only €6'

and then continues with:

'The first adjustments will be made in October and will be repeated in subsequent bills over the next year'

At that rate it will cost more to refund it than we will receive or am I missing something?

Seems to be the regular charges are in place, but this is easily twice what I would normally pay for this time of year.

My electric consumption is extremely low.

Thats a great rate, whats the name of your electricity plan?
 
My gas consumption, in a 4 person household, is 45% below the national average.
My electricity consumption is 30% below the national average. The house has a G rating. There's lots people can do to reduce their usage. If you are using a tumble dryer then you can affor you bill.

Small business market rate with energia.

But remember you run the risk of high prices without notice if the market gets volatile again. Last November I believe this was over 70c, but with gas prices stable and the Ukraine war not providing many surprises, that is unlikely.

Stick the tumble dryer on done deal and put the procedes against the cost of a dehumidifier. A double win if you have damp problem in the house.

A standing charge of 43 euro?

Isn't your bill self explanatory?
You've used 130 day units at 48.7c each and 213 night units at 22.36c each.
Every bill has a standing charge and yours seems to be €270 p.a.
You have some discount deducted and the (currently negative) PSO levy is also deducted.
VAT is added to the total.

Only you can figure out what devices/appliances in your home are using most electricity.

You might want to read this if you're still confused about your bill.

Standing charges have crept up. ESB are now charging over a euro a day (after vat) for Day/Night customers which is why I left them. Some others have followed suit so you need to check the whole package when your looking for a cheaper switch.
 
Its simply a matter of time before decent reductions come through and public representatives should be more vocal and gov should put pressure in Electric Ireland and Bord Gais as they are majority shareholder.

On the plus side, businesses that suffered high rates last year are enjoying rates that were last seen in 2021, so be very wary of businesses using the "energy costs" excuse as they can shop around and take advantage of current market rates.

Here's my business bill for Aug (Energia Rate name = SME Wholesale)

Standing Charge €9.39 - (see 2 lines down why this is low)
24Hr Wholesale Energy Cost 1,212 kWh @ €0.1460699 €177.03 - wholesale electricty cost (can be volatile and went to 73c last Nov)
24Hr UoS and Market Costs 1,212 kWh @ €0.103981 €126.02 - fairly static. Some of these costs are in the standing charge of other rate plans.
Supplier Capacity Charge (7am-11pm) 1,060.99 kWh @ €0.01197 €12.70
PSO Levy Flat Charge €44.50CR
EEOS 1,212 kWh @ €0.0013 €1.58
EEOS Credit 1,212 kWh @ €0.0013- €1.58 CR
Electricity Tax 1,212 kWh @ €0.001 €1.21


Domestic rates will follow and it is entirely possible to see rates coming back under 25c and most likely via a return to discounts, thus disadvantaging those who don't haggle (unfair)
 
So I contacted energia for a quote (variable SME wholesale) and the sent on the variable prices BUT the early termination fee on 12m contract is €1,800 for DG5 (i.e. non domestic, low voltage)

So watch out, its a pretty outrageous break fee on a variable price contract
 
Maybe we should have separate threads for domestic and business energy offerings? These posts about business rates are almost certainly irrelevant to the vast majority of Askaboutmoney posters.

But that standing charge is kind of steep?

Would that be about average for domestic users?

The unit rates are also unusually high nationally at the moment?
Cause given my electric use is so low (I mean, that's not a lot of units for the time period, right?), I'm normally billed around 50% this amount for this time of year.

My contract renews about mid-December, so stuck until then apparently.
When I checked bonkers/switcher etc last period, only FloGas offered slightly better rates.
 
I have just received my current bill from Energia and am horrified that its E420.68, my standing charge is E44.25 and my unit cost is 0.4444 per unit. I must have had the dryer on more than i thought for July, will need to seriously look at reducing consumption over the coming months. Any tips anyone.

As ever, you need to identify what devices/appliances use most electricity and then use that info guide for IV economising. If the dryer is a culprit then dry laundry outdoors or indoors with a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier will use a lot less electricity than a dryer.
