Initial Deposit refund?

I've put an initial deposit (5K) on a new house last week. Since then the estate agent has been pretty crappy at getting back to us re: extra costs, what exactly is included (a listing of everything), not to mention extremely tight in giving anything extra whatsoever - wont budge from what's on plans. In this current climate loads of developments seem to be including extras/if not dropping in price. We've kept looking anyway to be curious & have found another house we like in another development thats just come on the market. Is it a big deal to ask for our deposit back, should we decide we didn't want to go for the original house. The deposit was fully refundable we were told at the beginning, and have it in writing. (No contract has been signed or anything obviously).

Yes you are able to get this deposit back. It is when you pay 10% of the house price that you would loose this if you pulled out.
Just ring estate agent and say you are pulling out of the deal, dont even have to give a reason if you dont want and the estate agent should post you out a cheque within the week.

Better still, call them tomorrow and tell them that you will collect cheque on Monday evening. Then when cheque is cleared you should tell them the real reason -- the intransigence of the developer. Offer him some free advice -- Wake up and Smell the Coffee
